ABOUT JULIAN

Julian Dobre joins Donna Purcell QC law following the completion of his JD/MBA at the University of Calgary. Julian practices Technology & Media Law, with clients in entertainment, social media, manufacturing, human resources, software, education, and gaming. 

Julian has cross-sector work experience in Alberta. He has previously worked in the energy sector, at a major oil and gas company in Calgary. He has worked at the Alberta Securities Commission, New Economy Division, where he strove to bring new technologies like cryptocurrency and blockchain to Alberta. He has worked at a cryptocurrency start-up in their compliance department, assisting them with navigating securities laws. 

Julian is passionate about politics. He has participated as a bi-partisan volunteer in elections at all levels of government. He is the founder of Polity, a social start-up that provides software and intelligence to political candidates and parties. Outside of his career, Julian loves to play and write music. He is a passionate blues guitarist and producer within Calgary’s live music scene.

Julian has experience drafting, negotiating, rewriting, and advising on contracts across sectors. He has done several brand deals in the social media space and have negotiated for better terms for my clients. He has experience drafting internet law documents, including terms of service, privacy policies, subscriber agreements, and cookies policies, as well as employment contracts, contractor agreements, IP agreements, waivers, and other commercial contracts. 

Julian has broad experience in the corporate space, with clients in entertainment, manufacturing, software, agriculture, human resources, and financial services. He has exposure on a number of transactions and services, including incorporation, not-for-profit incorporation, share and loan issuance, share purchases, sale of business, sale of assets, business valuations, and business and marketing consulting. 

Julian has exposure in personal injury and commercial litigation, with experience drafting demand letters, statements of claim, settlement proposals, and mediation briefs. He has experience attending questionings and mediations, and conducting research into complex litigation issues.

Julian has researched, advised, and filed trademarks for clients in the entertainment, software, and human resources spaces.  He has a class 3 license with CIPO as a Trademark Agent in Training. 

Julian is a business owner with experience running a tech startup in Alberta, securing financing, launching new products, obtaining research grants, and developing technology and software. He provides a broad range of business and marketing consulting services, including website development, brand development, writing pitch decks, writing business plans, advertising, strategic planning, product-market fit, and customer segmentation.
