STUDENT-AT-LAW
Brief info

Shazia Umer
Edmonton, AB

Shazia Umer is an internationally trained law student who received her LL.B. from the University of Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. Shazia joined Donna Purcell QC Law's Edmonton office as a Student-at-Law in the Fall of 2020. She is currently undergoing the process of qualifying to practice law in Canada.

Her primary areas of practice comprise general civil litigation with a focus on personal injury and employment law. She is thrilled to be able to hone her knowledge and skills under Ms. Purcell's mentorship.

Shazia is fluent in Urdu and brushing up her Arabic via e-classes for over five years. Her spirit of enquiry about indigenous history and background led her to gain certificates in Indigenous Canada from the University of Alberta and University of Toronto.

Her passion for making a difference and raising awareness about the challenges faced by internationally trained lawyers brought her to join like-minded people. She was instrumental in launching the Global Lawyers of Canada ("GLC") Edmonton Chapter in 2018. Even though she is no longer a director in this non-profit organization, she regularly answers the questions for internationally experienced lawyers pursuing their path to the legal profession in Canada.

Before joining Donna Purcell QC Law, she has volunteered as an Adult Court Worker with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Edmonton. She is currently volunteering with Edmonton Community Legal Center every Monday for Legal Literacy Education Presentations hosted by Action for Health Communities to share general information with the attendees.

Outside of the office, Shazia enjoys volunteering at Edmonton Public Schools. She also teaches at her community school and believes in active engagement with young minds.

When she is not busy with her work, you can find her socializing with friends, keeping up with current events, and exploring city trails with her teens. She is ready to hop on a plane to visit all those destinations that she had travelled to before Covid-19 travel restrictions.
